The headlines read “Merck has completed clinical trials to test the efficacy of finasteride in male pattern hair loss,” with the drug apparently showing promise in treating hair loss in male pattern baldness. The drug was initially rejected twice, but was later approved by the MHRA as Propecia, which effectively treats hair loss and reduces inflammation.
The drug was originally developed to treat enlarged prostate glands, but researchers discovered that finasteride reduces hair loss by blocking the production of a hormone that shrinks hair follicles. Propecia is now approved for hair loss in both men and women. Merck says it is “100 per cent hair loss treatment” and will continue to sell the drug as long as it is used under licence by the MHRA. This decision follows the rejection of finasteride, which is also used to treat hair loss in men. Merck has twice rejected Propecia, but has twice rejected finasteride. Propecia is only approved for use by women and only once in 2013 was approved for use by men. Merck says it is ‘100 per cent hair loss treatment’ and will continue to sell the drug as long as it is used under licence by the MHRA.
The MHRA considers Propecia to be ‘disproportionate’ and has twice rejected it.
